Meloni Says Ukraine, Energy Dominate Italian Presidency of Europe

Italy’s Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni on Friday said the war in Ukraine and the energy crisis would be the main themes of Italy’s presidency of the European Union.

Meloni, who took office last month, told reporters that the war in Ukraine “has changed the world, and Europe must find the strength to respond.”

”We need to be more united and effective, and we need to defend our values and interests,” she said.”

Meloni’s comments came after meeting with European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen in Rome.

Von der Leyen said that she and Meloni had a “very constructive” discussion about the challenges facing Europe.

“We agreed that the war in Ukraine and the energy crisis are the most pressing issues, and we need to work together to find solutions,” she said.

Italy will hold the rotating presidency of the EU for six months, from July 1 to December 31.

During its presidency, Italy will chair meetings of the EU Council, which brings together the leaders of the 27 EU member states.

It will also represent the EU in negotiations with other countries and international organizations.

Meloni said that Italy would use its presidency to push for a stronger and more united Europe.

“We want to make Europe more effective in responding to the challenges of the 21st century,” she said.

“We want to make Europe more secure, more prosperous, and more just.”
